Reading at School and at Home

Scholastic Book Orders- I urge you to find (inexpensive!) books your child would enjoy for their daily reading time; many actually coincide with our curriculum! I will be making recommendations online and you can get the link on the website. Our class earns books for our reading groups when we get points for your orders.

Leveled Readers-  Your child will take home a leveled reader each week that your child has practiced reading in his or her group that day. This should be at an independent level and counts for that 10 minutes of reading for that night. You may keep it and read it again for the next night. Please KEEP it until your child is fluent (smooth with few errors) with the whole book. Please send it back in by Friday. You can read or takes turns reading books from home for other nights.

We practice our books at school so students should be familiar with the words for their take home readers they bring home 1-2 times a week.  Other reading groups are spent working on sight words, fluency and phonics.  They read 1-2 pages out loud and listened to the teacher or their classmates read the story as they followed along.  At home your child should read the WHOLE book.  Write down words they struggled with.  Have students “sound out” words but don’t work on words longer than 15-20 seconds.
